Nakamigos NFT collection baffled the community last March with the astounding amount of trades in a very short time. In 4 days’ time, the collection made $13 million in trading volume and managed to surpass the NFT giants BAYC in lifetime trades.
But the freshness of Nakamigos didn’t allow individuals to predict such success so early down the road. The NFT community members argue that the collection’s success is due to 2 main things: the proven track record of its founder, and its origin and associations.
What is the Nakamigos NFT Collection?
The Nakamigos NFT collection is the brainchild of HiFo Labs. On March 23, 2023, it made its grand appearance with 20,000 PFP NFTs. The NFTs comprise of 24×24 pixel characters resembling CryptoPunks. As for its name, it derives from Nakamoto, the pseudonymous Bitcoin creator— Nakamigos being the Amigos of Nakamoto.
There are 6 types of human Nakamigos: Latte, Boba, Pumpkin Spice, Mocha, coffee, and invisible. While the rarer non-humans are: Frog, Bot, Crocodile, Snowman, Balloon, and Ghost— ghosts being the rarest. There are also rare traits, including crowns, hoodies, capes, and more. The team reserves 500 Nakamigos to itself.
All 20,000 Nakamigos NFTs have been minted out. eos pass holders received early access to the collection on March 22, and the public mint went live on March 23 in a Dutch auction that started at 1 ETH and went down to 0.01 ETH.
The Nakamigos team grants holders commercial rights to their NFTs, allowing them to monetize them as they see fit. The licensing agreement states that holders can even trademark their NFT so long as it is actually being “used in commerce” and not just on an intent-to-use basis.
According to HiFo Labs, the artist behind the project is an “OG crypto artist” who has not yet revealed their identity. Many have speculated the artist is none other than Sartoshi, the NFT influencer and crypto artist behind 2021’s popular mfers collection.

Nakamigos Connection to Sartoshi
Before creating mfers, Sartoshi had accumulated a significant following on Web3 Twitter. This step helped solidify the project’s success when it launched in November 2021. But in June 2022, Sartoshi decided to leave mfers, stating he intended to hand over project leadership and funds to the community as a commitment to the Web3 ethos of decentralization.
Many labeled this move as a rug-pull, while others had long been calling for it.
As a sentimental farewell to his community, Sartoshi minted the end of Sartoshi- eos pass collection. But 6 months later, he returned to pick up the pieces after his controversial exit.
In a February 16 tweet, Sartoshi informed his following that Nakamigos was going to be a 20K PFP project, and that holders of the eos pass would be granted a free mint from the collection a day before it became available to the public on March 23. However, Sartoshi’s exact role in relation to the project has yet to be officially clarified.
the 20k project is NAKAMIGOS

The future of Nakamigos remains quite vague with no Discord and no other social media channel other than its Twitter. HiFo Labs also communicates quite faintly with its community, rendering the project obscure. All we can say is the collection seems like it’s aiming to be a kind of spiritual successor to CryptoPunks. And its numbers have made headlines.
Will the company step out of the shadows in the near future? Doing so would establish much greater trust from their community.
